Australia had always been known for its sense of fair play or so we all thought.but since the affair of Dr Haneef,that has been proven to be a lie in so many ways.first of all these anti terror laws are so reminiscent of the Red hunt days in the united states especially during the McCarthy era.anyway these anti terror laws are more directed against the ordinary citizens and they literally trample over a persons civil rights as well as spit on those.it is right that every country in the world must have anti terror laws so as to deal with terrorists but when one frames such laws one should also take into account the countries constitution and the civil liberties framed under such.
In the case of Dr Haneef,that certainly did not happen.his civil rights were trampled by the Australian federal police who seem to be only too eager to break laws in their eagerness to frame Haneef for a crime that WAS not a crime in any one's eyes.lending a SIM card to a friend so that the talktime should not go to waste is something we all have done and still do.to use that as a pretext and to label that person as a terrorist is taking things too far.Haneef had been jailed under such dubious charges for nearly a month and in 'solitary confinement'.imagine getting locked up for nearly 23 hrs everyday all because you had lent your SIM card to your friend.
And what is really disgusting is the way that the federal police tried to cover their tracks once they realised their mistake.they tried to make false entries into Haneef's diary or so it is alleged and pretty much went on a publicity blitz labelling him as a terrorist to all and sundry and gave advice to the minister to deport him.the Australian government as well as the Federal police will have to answer some very serious charges to both the Australian public and the world.if anyone had seen the movie'mississippi burning',this case of Dr Haneef,resembles the case of those civil right activists who were falsely charged and then killed by the racist cops.
And now we have this admission that Dr Haneef is innocent but will the trauma end there.if one is proven to be wrong then the right thing to do is to make restitution.so far i do not think that the federal police or the immigration minister has shown any remorse or have apologised in any form or manner to Dr Haneef and his family for the trauma that they have put them through.the so called fair reputation of Australia is indeed in the gutters and the sooner they address this fiasco and make restitution,the sooner this reputation will be restored but i feel that it is too little,too late.

Maybe it is their eyes.anyway the recent 'ghost' cat to make the headlines is currently located at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,providence.the cat is a part of this hospital and makes rounds and for some reason is able to sense when patients are about to die.so when he makes such a call,he goes to the patient and curls up beside them.it seems that the Ancient Egyptians were right about cats after all.this is one story that is turning out to be a 'Meooow'!

South Korean hostage crisis!

The south Korean hostage crisis seems to get murkier day by day with the Afghanistan officials running here and there but in the end ,not accomplishing much by any one's standards.already one of the hostages has been shot in cold blood by the erstwhile Taliban militants.according to certain police sources,the hostage in question was sick and could not walk therefore he was shot by the militants and get this,right on his birthday.his aging mother who was in south Korea at that time was waiting for a phone call from her son so that she could wish him happy birthday.
that really takes the cake and et all.with the allied forces also present in Afghanistan,couldn't they track these militants down and eradicate them once and for all.what about the women hostages,could they not be released.as for the demands of the militants,well one of them wants Taliban prisoners to be released,the other wants money while the other militants are not sure about what they want and already there have been arguments and small skirmishes amongst themselves,according to certain well placed sources in the Taliban.shouldn't this be the time when the government forces should attack them,especially when the militants are disorganised and confused??

The nuclear deal may get inked sooner than later!

With things going the way it has been for both the United States and India,getting the Nuclear deal through had transformed from being in mutual interest to quite essential for the relationship between the world's oldest and the largest democracies.the current political government in India,the Congress may seem gung-ho on the Nuclear deal but to the Hoi-polloi of India's literate,they would have been extremely happy had this deal fallen through.as far as the literate citizens are concerned they regard this deal as a loss of sovereignty.to be fair,this deal is indeed highly intrusive so this opinion on their part is not exactly surprising.
But now that the deal is almost sure to get inked through,the question especially in the minds of George bush and Manmohan singh is,what next?although this deal may indeed be a highly intrusive deal,India should now concentrate on acquiring additional sources of fuel supplies and not solely depend on nuclear power in the future.what is more India should find some way of converting the huge amounts of thorium that it has and utilise that as nuclear fuel so as to insulate itself against any breakdown in the supply of nuclear fuel to its reactors.politics is cheap and dirty.you never know if the deal signed by the last government will be honored by the current one.after all,"there is no honor amongst......"

With the entire world realising that the Taliban is holed up in Pakistan,the United States is growing frustrated with Pakistan and Musharaff's inability to deal with the insurgents of the Taliban and Alqueda.as it is things within the ruling establisment of Pakistan is not exactly hunky dory.it seems that matters are slowly but surely getting out of hand in Pakistan as more and more bomb attacks are aimed at army and police barracks.of late the frequency of attacks against civilians in Afghanistan has increased five fold.all of these attacks have been committed by the Taliban forces who are holed up in the North west frontier provinces of Pakistan.
With Pakistan becoming more focused in its internal affairs,the United States has sent out a veiled threat to Musharaff,either clean up the mess yourself or we will do it and we will do it in style.so the question is with the current radical forces lined up against Musharaff,will Musharaff grant the United States permission to combat militants within the sovereign territory of Pakistan?if he does that,it may well be the final straw that will break the current Pakistani government's back!

North Korea has shot down one of its main nuclear reactors,thus giving peace a change as well as the possibility of both Korea's merging into one.but of course thats too far into the future so lets see what happens.anyway for the present moment the chief U.S. nuclear envoy expressed optimism after a day of meetings Tuesday with his North Korean counterpart, saying no new obstacles to progress on disarmament have emerged following Pyongyang's shutdown of its sole operating reactor.
With Pyongyang taking such a move well for one thing Japan as well as South Korea can now rest a little bit easier.of course credit should also go to the Chinese without whom this would not have been possible.now all that remains to be seen is how far would
Pyongyang go to appease the Allied Forces as regards its nuclear arsenal.it is rumored that North Korea has already an operable nuclear bomb.well,now that Pyongyang has taken this step one can only hope that North Korea would continue the rest of the path to peace and prosperity!

Sting Stung down by Discriminaiton!!

Sting and his wife were ordered by a tribunal to pay 51,000$ to their ex chef who alleges that she was fired because she became pregnant.normally this is where the story gets a bit dicey.according to the ex chef,sting's wife Trudi Styler grew quite unhappy with the chef because she[the chef] became pregnant.so this is all about a sex discrimination case prepetuated by woman on woman.normally it would be man on woman or woman on man but ladies and gentlemen,these are indeed changing times because now we have sexual discrimination cases where both the parties are women.
Anyway Jane Martin,went to tribunal and she won the case with the tribunal ruling in her favor.it seems that most of the men who are wealthy act quite normal but it is the women who put on these grandiose airs.but that's a topic for man versus woman.anyway coming back to the issue at hand,the Stings have said that they will appeal the decision.maybe they will go away and lick their wounds and start stinging later??

Down Under's Rep in shreds!

The case of Dr Haneef gets murkier by the day,not the case itself but the actions of the current Australian government.We all know that Dr Haneef had loaned his SIM card which had some balance talktime on it to one of his friends in Glasgow.we have all done this.we have all loaned our SIM cards to our friends especially if we did not want the talktime to go to waste.the judge had ruled fairly in Dr Haneef's case telling the federal authorities that the case against Dr Haneef was flimsy at the best and therefore he was granted bail by the said judge.
But to the surprise of all,the federal authorities have now placed Dr Haneef under detention once again under the pretext that he had failed the character test as per his visa rules and have therefore cancelled his visa and have placed him under detention.I ask you,how can we know what purpose the SIM cards that we have loaned,would be used for.it is not like we all have a crystal ball in our heads,maybe John Howard does have one in his head but we sure do not.what is more the Aussie minister in charge of Immigration had beed heard mentioning that more serious charges may be filed against Dr Haneef soon.all this smells fishy and rotten at that.Australia had always stood for laidback attitudes,fun time and most of all fairplay.but now it is that very reputation fairness that stands in the docket.it is not wonder that this case in particular has got so many aussies riled up.it has all the handimarks of the British dominion when they ruled Australia with an iron fist.
But I do not think that mr Howard has thought this out thoroughly.normally India would not interfere in another countries judicial progress but when it is a Kangaroo court that is being held,well,India will surely react,it is just a matter of time.single handedly John Howard has managed to put a big damper on relations with India as well as other Indian oceanic countries of late.by the time the next elections come around i would not be too surprised if Australia was 'personna non grata' in many of these countries.already India has taken a serious note of goings on in Australia.Australia,the land of kangaroos is currently holding a 'kangaroo court' session!well done!now you have something you can actually be proud of!

Bush says NO to Iraq pullout!

George Bush has threatened to Veto any legislation that may be passed by both the houses.so the war that nobody wants goes on.this is a war whose reasons were found on the most flimsiest of reasons.and even as i write this the War against the Iraqi's still rage on.with hundreds dying every month is it any surprising that the fate of the entire nation is being decided thousands of miles away in the American heartland.i do not in any form or matter sympathise with the militants and do believe that they should be dealt with most severely.but the fact of the matter is that many innocents are being caught in the crossfire or the militants A.K.A terrorists are using them as human Shields.when will the blood letting stop.
I have to say that any American withdrawal under the present circumstances will be deadly for the Iraqi's and a full fledged civil war will break out.as much as we may love to disagree with Bush but in this case we would have to agree with him.the war should have never happened but it did.so lets not dwell on whether it should or should not have happened and let us face facts.
one:an American withdrawal without any allied presence in Iraq would allow Iran and the militants to foment a civil war.
two:if America does indeed want to withdraw its troops it should do only after the United nation forces take their place
three:the United nation forces are at the moment understaffed and their weapons outdated,so before any substitution can take place this must be corrected
four:Iran should be made to understand in very clear terms that any interference in Iraq affairs will not be tolerated by the world at large.
five:the middle east as a whole should understand that a stable Iraq is in their best interests.
six:the militants/subversives,terrorists should all be hunted down and dealt with right away so that security and peace for the Iraqi's is assured.
no troop withdrawal can take place before all of the above points are dealt with.otherwise it will be disastrous for Iraq and its citizens!

The big freeze is heading your way!

Argentina witnessed its first major snowfall since 1918.they naturally cheered the event and everyone joined in a good old fashioned snowball fight.but many scientists all over the world are very worried with the way that the weather is acting up.they are afraid that the current crazy weather phenomenon is more or less a start of the next ice age.and going by research and facts,the ocean currents which deliver warm waters and warm weather to the northern regions of the earth has started slowing down.the scientists fear that once the ocean currents start to slow they will eventually stop.which would immediately put the northern hemisphere in the grip of a severe cold wave.the weather at my place is going nuts as well.of course it is not bad crazy but actually good crazy.although the weather here in chennai may be out of the ordinary many of the chennaites are actually enjoying a very pleasant summer with temperatures ranging around 20 celcius.
While normally the temps here in chennai would have been around 30 degrees or so.anyway the way that the weather is acting up of late,do not be all that surprised if you encounter a big freeze this winter especially if you happen to live in the northern hemisphere!either way,folks,we are all sure going to see some crazy action on the weather front!

We are going to get a taste of Martian water!

NASA is going to send a mission to Mars come august titled 'phoenix'.this mission unlike other missions is going to be sent to the northern plains of Mars where the ice is alleged to be on the surface just slightly beneath the subsoil.this mission is all about ice,literally.the main objectives of this mission is to analyse the Martian ice for its components and any evidence of life in any form whatsoever.generally the scientists all believe that microbes should exist even in a barren atmosphere as long as water is present.
Well by next may[the landing time for Phoenix on mars] we will all know whether water exists on Mars and in a manner of speaking we would actually taste the martian water at least know what it is composed of.who knows,maybe in a few years we may even be drinking bottled martian water?!?
Phoenix is not going to have a soft landing according to NASA but instead going to crash into the northern plains of Mars.but unfortunately this time around,the camera would be left out of the mission.that is really too bad as those high res image of ice on Mars would be just fantastic.i guess we should all settle for just a telescopic image of the Martian polar cap for the moment.come next may,many of our earnest questions are going to be answered.whether water existed on mars and whether life is still there on Mars!

India,being aware of all this wanted a dialogue to be started between the various parties with the hope that peace would prevail.but that proposal did not even get off the ground.in the meanwhile Pakistan which was allied with China was taking serious action against the rebels in East Pakistan,driving the rebels into the Indian territories.Indira[India's prime minister] seeing that India was becoming overcome by the wave of refugees decided to meet with Nixon prior to which she and India had signed an all weather friendship pact with Soviet union.the all too infamous meeting between Indira gandhi,Henry kissinger and Nixon took place in late 1971.the U.S and nixon in particular wanted India to back off East Pakistan so that no war interferes with the U.S plans vis a vis China.but that did not happen.the U.S and Nixon in particular undrestimated Indira gandhi's resolve and the rest is history.Bangladesh got her independence and both India and the Soviet Union can truly be credited for helping her achieve this.all that the U.S did at that time was to vehemently object to the idea of a free Bangladesh,also the U.S asked China to attack India and at the same time the U.S had also sent in one of her warships into the bay of bengal thinking that would be a deterrent to the creation of Bangladesh.of course as history would tel you,the U.S failed miserably in its foreign policy at that time because in one dumb decision by a paranoid president[Nixon] and an arrogant adviser[Kissinger] the U.S managed to rub off India the wrong way,the consequences of that decision still resonates ever so loudly in the sub continent.of course the parameters as well as the players have changed and probably the new generation may not remember much but India and Bangladesh both have a long memory and they are not going to forget what the U.S tried to do in 1971,sacrificing democracy so that the U.S foreign policy vis a vis China would be on track!the recently declassified documents sheds light especially on the Nixon-Indira meetings.
